Summer Curl Tips

We love summer! I mean, who doesn’t stan Vacations, Beach Days, and Barbecues? Well, our natural curly hair actually. Summer days and nights can actually be very damaging to your delicate follicles- especially those with kinky, coily and curly textures. Excessive heat, chlorine, sweat, and so many other factors can cause a lack of moisture and brittle hair. For this reason, we compiled a list of tips to care for and protect your curls so that they stay beautiful and hydrated all summer long!

1. Turn Down the Heat 🔥

In general, hot tools are terrible for the integrity and health of your hair, especially for curly girls. However the summer is a time when you need as much moisture as you can get, so during these hotter months, the use of hot tools becomes even more damaging. Further, hot, humid weather forces you to use your hair tools even more often. This is a great opportunity to further embrace your natural hair texture as often as possible by giving your hair as much of a break as you can. Instead of using heat, try airdrying your hair. As long as you don’t touch your hair until it is fully dry, the results will be super-defined curls with limited frizz

For the perfect airdrying technique, we recommend using A leave-in conditioner such as Finest Fluid by Oway and a cocktail of Curl Building Serum and Curl Moisturizing Mousse by Davines.

 2. Get a Cute Curly Haircut ✂️

Getting a great curly dry cut will help you worry less and have more time for fun during the summer. Establishing a low-maintenance shape with blunt edges and curls that have been cut in clusters keeps the perimeter nice and crisp so that everything just falls into place. This will make it so that you don’t need to depend on a diffuser to create defined curls with minimal effort on your part. At Virgo Curly Hair Salon in Los Angeles, we cut your hair to suit your lifestyle ensuring that every style will be one that you can do in no time at all giving your more time for summer fun. To keep up with that ease and to maintain the health of your hair, we recommend getting your hair cut every 3-4 months depending on how fast your hair grows.

3. Infuse your Curly hair with Moisture 💦

Moisture is essential for curly hair, especially when the weather is hotter. This means using moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and even styling products.

A great super moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner are the Moisturizing Hair Bath and Mask by Oway or the MOMO Shampoo and Conditioner by Davines.

As far as styling products, we suggest Curl Building Serum and Curl Moisturizing Mousse. For a super hydrating option for a perfectly tousled look, try Next Day Cream by Oway.

4. Deep condition Curly hair frequently

Now is the time to double up on your moisturizing and nourishment which means that if you normally use a deep conditioner once a week, you can go ahead and start using it every time you wash your hair for the hotter months. On your days off, you can even apply the conditioning treatment, wrap your hair in plastic, and leave it on for an hour or so. If you want to supercharge it, you can sit under a dryer if you have one or even under the sun since the thick conditioner will act as a barrier between yourself and the harmful UV rays (but don’t forget the sunscreen for your skin!)

Our absolute favorite all-around deep conditioner is the Vegetarian Miracle Mask by Davines. It is abundantly hydrating and nourishing and formulated for all hair types.

5. Switch out some of your normal shampoo sessions for cleansing conditioners (Co-washes)

You may feel inclined to shampoo more frequently during the summer- and you should remove sweat and product build-up, but during these months, consider alternating your regular shampoos with conditioning cleansers to avoid moisture depletion. For example, if you shampoo twice a week, switch one of those to a co-wash to maintain your hair’s moisture levels.

Our go-to Cleansing conditioner is the Curl Cleansing Cream by Davines.

6. Protect your hair from the Sun ☀️

Protecting your hair from harmful uv rays is just as important as it is for your skin. In the summer, we tend to be out and about more, hanging by the pool, visiting the beach etc. It is important and crucial to shield your hair from elements by limiting exposure, covering your hair with a hat or headscarf, and using products with thermal protection and Spf. Try Oway’s Sunway line which is formulated to both protect and repair your hair from the sun
